Pioneer TS-A6986R Car Speakers Review

Pioneer has been a stand-out brand in the audio technology industry for a very long time. We have owned (and still use) Pioneer speakers that we have owned for years, and we are still surprised with the quality of sound that they are pumping out. However, the latest release from Pioneer is taking everything that makes Pioneer speakers so great and turning it up a notch. The new TS-A series are affordable, easy-to-install and produce a well-rounded sound that is hard to match at this price.

The stand-out product from the TS-A series is undoubtedly the TS-A6986R 6×9” 4-way speakers. If you are looking to upgrade the entire sound system of your car but you don’t want to go through all of the efforts of purchasing individual speakers and components, these 4-way speakers are the perfect choice for you.

Pros

  • 4-Way Speakers
  • Great for Beginners to Car Audio
  • Consistent Sound Everywhere in the Car

Cons

  • 4-Way Means They do Everything Good but Nothing Great
  • Will Take Some Time to Perform at Full Capacity

The Pioneer TS-A6986R car speakers is a pair of car speakers that you don’t need to be ashamed of. They give you a more powerful sound in your car but without being to much. The speakers will not win any competition but for the average Joe that is looking for better than OEM, the TS-A6986R is well worth it.

What Exactly Are 6”x9” 4-way speakers?

Most sound systems are built up of several components including a subwoofer that produces the low ends, and tweeters that produce the high ends. Building a system that satisfies the entire range of the sound spectrum takes knowledge and considerably more money than if you were to purchase a full-range set of speakers that do everything all-in-one: Enter, the TS-A6986R.

What Makes The TS-A6986R So Great?

The latest range of Pioneer speakers are a great way to improve the overall sound profile of your system without breaking the bank, and without having to understand and mess with all of the individual components. You can power these speakers with your stock, factory head unit, but if you want to take the sound to the next level, we would recommend investing in a new amplifier.

As the name suggests (4-way), the TA6986R feature all four of the speakers that make up a complete audio system. You have a decent sized subwoofer with a multilayer Mica matrix cone (allows for better bass ranges), a quality mid-range tweeter and two super-tweeters to support the highs. Overall, the clean, modern looking shell of the TS-A6986R’s house everything you need to produce great quality, well-rounded sound.

The suggested power output for each speaker is 100 Watt RMS which is incredibly powerful considering the fact that these are just 6×9 speakers. The peak power handling is said to be 300 Watts per speaker, giving the system (2-speakers) a total power handling of 600 Watts.

The way in which these speakers have been designed and built does wonder for the sound dispersion. A lot of 4-way speakers will be so poorly designed that the sound, although it has decent clarity and volume, just doesn’t sit well with your ears because of the way the speakers have been placed inside the housing. There are no issues like that with these 4-ways. The sound dispersion is wide, allowing you to enjoy a quality and consistent sound wherever you are in the vehicle.

Things They Could Have Done Better

Although the TS-A series 4-way speakers are a fantastic choice for those who are looking to drastically improve the sound quality of the stock stereo speakers that came with the vehicle, there are a couple of things that you need to understand before you go ahead and grab yourself a pair.

First of all, these are 4-way speakers. Wait, why is that a bad thing? Well, in essence, it isn’t, but they are still limited in what they can offer, especially when you compare them to a component system that has dedicated speakers for each part of the sound profile.

Unfortunately, you will never be able to replicate the deep levels of bass that a subwoofer can produce with these things, and the mids and highs will sound amazing, but they won’t compare to those produces by separate, dedicated tweeters.

What is the best subwoofer for deep bass? Take a look at the what is the best subwoofer for deep bass page to find out.

Also, these speakers will need breaking in for a little while. How long it takes for them to reach their “peak sound” depends on a few factors, but it’s worth noting that these will not perform at their full capabilities straight out of the box. With that being said, that’s not necessarily a bad thing or an indication that these are sub-par speakers. It’s simply a general disadvantage of purchasing aftermarket speakers. They need to be broken in.

Would We Recommend The Pioneer TS-A6986R’s?

If you are looking to drastically improve your cars stereo system without breaking the bank and without having to build an entire system from scratch, these are without a doubt the best speakers for the job.

They are well-built, the individual speakers that make up the 4-way system are powerful considering their small size and the range of sound that these things can produce is surprisingly good. Again, you aren’t going to be winning any competitions with these things, but what you will win is overall better sounding music than the stuff that is currently coming out of your stock speakers.
