Cosco Mighty Fit 65 Review – Is it the right choice?

Cosco Mighty Fit 65 DX Convertible Car Seat Review
It’s great value for the money, but does it deliver?

The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this car seat was, “you get what you paid for.” Is it true with the Cosco Mighty Fit 65 DX Convertible Car Seat?

Look:

Usually, there’s a problem with cheap car seats. And it’s not what you think. Safety-wise they all deliver. If there would be issues, then they would’ve been discontinued or recalled.

The big problem with cheap car seats is that they are bare-bone and not comfortable. They might be cutting corners with the material, and it feels like you’re putting your little one on sandpaper.

This is not the case with the Cosco MightyFit 65. It delivers on all fronts. In case you were wondering, it does have a cup holder as well. Some high-end brands don’t include that as default.

Before we get any further, let me give you a quick preview. This car seat has to modes. The rear-facing mode is for babies 5-20 pounds. And there’s the front-facing mode up to 65 pounds (while other more expensive ones only allow 40 pounds).

It has a narrow profile, so 3 across is easy to do. The material is smooth, and it can be removed. Plus, its machine washable.

Let’s get this Cosco Mighty Fit 65 review started. If you stick with me until the end, I will tell you the pros/cons. Some of them are unexpected, to say the least.

Who is the Cosco Mighty Fit 65 DX Convertible Car Seat?

This car seat is a basic one. It can be used as a primary seat, but parents often choose it for the babysitter or the grandparents. Also, this car seat is excellent for traveling.

You can take it with you on the plane, and you don’t have to pay extras for a rental.

What can the Cosco Mighty Fit 65 DX car seat do for you?

As you have seen from the picture, this is a tiny seat. I mean, it has both rear and front-facing mode. It does everything that it’s advertised to do. There are no extras and no bells and whistles. It’s compact and functional.

If you want to do extended rear-facing that’s possible because it supports a toddler up to 40 pounds; after that, you have to switch it to forward-facing; most expensive car seats only allow the 40 pound limit for forwarding is facing. This is why Cosco Mighty Fit is preferred amongst parents because the upper limit is 65 pounds.

To my surprise, it comes with many colors. And all of them look great.

This Cosco seat is lightweight, so it’s an ideal partner while traveling. This car seat is compact and narrow. So if you need a space saver car seat, this is a good choice.

If you choose extended rear-facing, then you have to know this. The car seat sits high, so your little one can see further. The security is good. It even offers side impact protection, which would be a bonus in this price range.

The material is a bit complex to remove, but it’s machine washable. Just throw it in the washing machine and it will be good as new.

Cosco Mighty Fit 65 shortcomings

If the most expensive car seats have flaws, what can we expect from this? I was surprised how well received this Cosco was. Matter of fact it’s not that bad as some people might think.

First of all, it doesn’t have a latch system for install. Yes, the sales page mentions it, but there’s no such thing. Maybe they had a different latch in mind. Once you get used to the latch system, you can’t turn back. It makes installation a breeze. I mean to click, click, and you’re done. Best of all, you can’t get it wrong.

Sadly the Cosco Mighty Fit 65 doesn’t come with that system. So with some grunt work, you can get it mounted.

There’s a problem with the straps. No matter how hard I tried, they always managed to tangle themselves. Instead of spending a few seconds on putting my child in and buckling, I spent minutes because I had to do the untangling. The truth is that this has happened every time.

The final nuisance comes from the car seat leveling. There’s no such thing. If you want your little one to be leveled while in the rear facing mode, you need to go DIY, this means you have to get a towel or a pool noodle to get the job done.

All in all, for cheap seats, these are not major issues. Sure they are a nuisance, and dealing it with daily gets old fast. Besides that, it’s safe and comfortable.

Are these a deal-breaker for you? Then you have to upgrade to a higher tier seat.

How To Get The Most Out Of Cosco Mighty Fit 65 DX Convertible Car Seat?

Since this car seat allows front and rear-facing mode, you have to choose the right one. If you want, you can use this with extended rear-facing mode. Many countries do it until the child is 4 years of age.

Once that’s decided, you have to place it in the perfect spot. The safest place for your child is in the middle. Now, this might not be good for you, no worries you can choose the second safest place which is behind the driver.

Since it doesn’t have a latch system, you have to do it the old fashion way, which requires 10 minutes. With practice, you can get it done faster. If you want to be extra safe, do get a second opinion from a licensed professional.
